A Joint Statement from Civil Society Organizations and Media Institutions to Mark the Passage of Three Years Since the Outbreak of War in Sudan

Uganda, Kampala 30 /April/ 2026
Coinciding with the third anniversary of the outbreak of the war on April 15th 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, human rights violations against civilians by both sides and their allies have increased. These violations have significantly escalated recently, including in areas under the control of both parties.
These violations represent a regression from the commitment to protect civilians and uphold human dignity and rights. Furthermore, the increase in systematic violence against civilians and their properties represent a dangerous trend. These violations and those responsible for them cannot be tolerated, they must be condemned and documented in order to achieve accountability without politicization.
In light of this complex situation, the Darfur Victims Support Organization took the initiative to invite a number of civil society organizations, representatives of some media institutions, and journalists working for peace and the protection of human rights, for the purpose of consulting and coordinating to prepare joint records in order to highlight the violations and the repercussions of the ongoing war in Sudan, in the framework of strategic advocacy efforts.
We, the Sudanese civil society organizations and media institutions that have signed this statement, call the parties of the war and their allies to stop these violations, and to hold their members who are participating in these violations accountable, and to make joint effort to protect civilians and facilities protected under international humanitarian law.
Based on our moral and historical responsibility to protect lives and possessions, we demand the following:
• Opening safe and sustainable safe corridors to allow the passage of aid to those affected, and to allow the unhindered movement of civilians.
• The protection of civilians by strictly adhering to international humanitarian law, and the protection of vital infrastructure such as hospitals and schools.
• Establishing effective mechanisms to ensure accountability and bringing to justice all those found to have committed serious violations, to guarantee redress for victims and compensation for damage.
We affirm that protecting civilians is not an option, but a legal and moral obligation that cannot be postponed or neglected, and that achieving lasting peace remains contingent on ending violations and ensuring accountability and justice.
